Laptops, smartphones, or tablets can be stolen or misplaced, exposing corporate data. Ensuring device encryption and rapid remote wipe are critical actions to prevent a larger breach.

Immediate Steps:

  • Attempt Remote Wipe: If MDM (Mobile Device Management) is in place, erase data.

  • Reset Passwords: Change credentials for accounts that might be auto-logged-in on the device.

  • Enable Device Tracking: If possible, use “Find My Device” or similar services to locate or disable.

  • Notify IT and Security: Let your internal team know about the loss.

  • Check Encryption: Confirm whether the device was encrypted; if not, treat it as a potential data breach.

  • File a Police Report: If stolen, document it officially.

Act quickly when a device goes missing to limit data exposure. Implementing encryption and MDM proactively can significantly reduce the risk.
